El INECOL invita a los interesados de México y del resto del mundo a participar en la Convocatoria para ocupar un puesto de investigador de elevada calidad. Los candidatos deberán mostrar un perfil compatible y congruente con el que se describe abajo. El INECOL es una institución financiada por el gobierno federal de México que realiza investigación y formación de estudiantes en ecología y sus disciplinas relacionadas (www.inecol.mx). Es un Centro Público de Investigación coordinado por el Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT). INECOL tiene su Sede Central en los municipios de Xalapa y Coatepec, Veracruz, y un Centro Regional en Pátzcuaro, Michoacán. Además, cuenta con tres estaciones de campo: 1) un ecosistema tropical/costero en La Mancha Veracruz, 2) un bosque de pino en La Michilía y 3) una región desértica en Mapimí; estas dos últimas en Durango. También cuenta con el Jardín Botánico Francisco Javier Clavijero (8 ha) y el Santuario del Bosque de Niebla (30 ha) en Xalapa. Actualmente cuenta con 121 científicos de tiempo completo, 121 técnicos, 88 administradores, más de 100 estudiantes de posgrado y más de 100 colaboradores financiados por proyectos externos. INVESTIGADOR EN: Ciencias de la Sustentabilidad y gestión integral de recursos naturales.

UN PUESTO DISPONIBLE

Título del Puesto: Investigador (Titular A).

Características del puesto: Tiempo completo, 12 meses. El nombramiento es renovable anualmente en función del rendimiento y financiamiento. Después de tres años, las/los candidatas/os pueden solicitar la definitividad, en apego al procedimiento de contrataciones con exámenes de aptitudes mencionados más adelante.

Descripción general

El candidato seleccionado se integrará a la Red de Ambiente y Sustentabilidad, uno de los retos de esta red es transitar a la transdisciplina para entender y poner en práctica acciones sustentables a distintas escalas espaciales y temporales. La Red de Ambiente y Sustentabilidad tiene como misión generar conocimiento científico y tecnológico en el ámbito ecológico y socioambiental acerca del funcionamiento, estructura e interacciones de los ecosistemas conservados y transformados. El(la) candidato(a) debe tener capacidad de generar y aplicar conocimiento y métodos enfocados a la solución de problemas con un enfoque multidisciplinario y contribuir al análisis de temas globales como el desarrollo sustentable, el cambio global y aumento en la población, entre otros. Debe contar con experiencia probada para generar y aplicar conocimientos y métodos en el campo del manejo sustentable de los recursos naturales renovables, de modo tal que sus resultados sean susceptibles de uso en la toma de decisiones y estrategias de políticas que promuevan el bienestar humano y el desarrollo sustentable. Deberá tener interés en desarrollar y utilizar metodologías diversas y prácticas educativas innovadoras en la formación de recursos humanos y en la capacitación técnica de diversos actores sociales. 

La/el candidata/o seleccionada/o trabajará en la Red de Ambiente y Sustentabilidad para realizar investigación en alguno(s) de los siguientes temas:

  • Manejo de recursos forestales, aprovechamiento de los bienes y servicios de los bosques. 
  • Políticas públicas, legislación ambiental y su equilibrio con actores sociales en el contexto de la sustentabilidad.
  • Datos masivos y aprendizaje de máquina (machine learning) en ciencias ambientales.
  • Servicios ecosistémicos e integridad ecosistémica. Estrategias de adaptación ante el cambio global con intervenciones basadas en ecosistemas: gestión ecosistémica.

Es importante señalar que la/el investigadora/or seleccionada/o será evaluada/o anualmente por los integrantes de su red de adscripción y por las autoridades del INECOL; la evaluación se llevará a cabo con base en el programa de trabajo acordado y siguiendo lo estipulado en el Estatuto del Personal Académico disponible en línea: http://normateca.inecol.edu.mx/normateca/). Se buscan candidatos que además de que cumplan con expectativas académicas, demuestren una inteligencia emocional bien desarrollada. 

Responsabilidades

  • Publicar resultados de investigación de acuerdo con lo establecido en el Estatuto del Personal Académico.
  • Ejecutar y liderar proyectos de investigación para obtener fondos, tanto para financiar la propia investigación como para contribuir al equipamiento y desarrollo de la red.
  • Participar en la formación de estudiantes en los programas de Maestría y Doctorado del INECOL mediante la impartición de cursos y dirección de tesis. Asimismo, involucrarse en la formación de estudiantes de licenciatura, servicios y prácticas de diferentes instituciones de educación superior. De particular interés será la participación en el curso de Posgrado en Manejo de Recursos Naturales y la posibilidad de proponer cursos innovadores en el ámbito de las investigaciones de la red.
  • Participar en actividades de divulgación y difusión de la ciencia del INECOL.
  • Colaborar con otros investigadores de esta y otras redes e instituciones.

Requisitos

  • Doctorado en ciencias ambientales y de la sustentabilidad o en áreas afines. 
  • Una estancia postdoctoral de al menos seis meses sobre la misma línea académica en alguna institución nacional o internacional que no sea la misma institución donde obtuvo el doctorado.
  • Experiencia en investigación y docencia a nivel posgrado o licenciatura (ideal más no definitorio).
  • Autoría de al menos cinco publicaciones científicas recientes (al menos tres como primer autor o autor de correspondencia), en revistas internacionales indizadas de alta calidad.
  • Habilidades comprobadas para escribir solicitudes de becas y proyectos.
  • Capacidad de trabajo con el sector privado y agencias gubernamentales para lograr vincularse con ellos y gestionar apoyos de diversa índole.
  • Experiencia de vida y trabajo en Latinoamérica deseable, pero no esencial.
  • Se requiere conocimiento de español e inglés (o su disposición para aprenderlos).
  • Habilidades y capacidad en la construcción y el trabajo en equipos interdisciplinarios.
  • Excelentes habilidades interpersonales y el cumplimiento de los reglamentos institucionales vigentes.
  • Compromiso con la ética e integridad científica.

The Institute of Ecology A.C. (INECOL) invites interested people in Mexico and the rest of the world to participate in this call to occupy a high-quality research position. The INECOL is a Public Research Center financed by the federal government of Mexico and coordinated by the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), which conducts research and trains students in ecology and related disciplines (www.inecol.mx). INECOL has its principal site close to the city of Xalapa, Veracruz State, and a regional center in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán State. It also has three field stations: 1) a coastal station in La Mancha, Veracruz, 2) a pine forest station in La Michilía, Durango, and 3) a desert station in Mapimí, Durango. INECOL also owns the Francisco Javier Clavijero Botanical Garden (8 ha) and the Cloud Forest Sanctuary (30 ha) in Xalapa. INECOL’s current personnel comprises 125 full-time researchers, 101 technicians, 87 administrative, support, gardening, and general services personnel, plus over 100 graduate students and over 100 co-workers funded by external grants. PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER IN: Sustainability Sciences and Natural Resources Management

Job Title: PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER (Investigador Titular A).

Job characteristics: Full time for 12 months. Contract renewable annually based on academic performance and productivity. The performance of the person hired will be evaluated annually by the Head of Department and the members of the Department and by INECOL authorities based on his/her accomplishment of the work program and activity plan agreed upon at the beginning of the hiring process. After three consecutive years of work, the person may request tenure following the guidelines of the Academic Staff Statute (Estatuto del Personal Académico, EPA available online: http://normateca.inecol.edu.mx/normateca/) following current administrative provisions. Besides fulfilling academic expectations, the person contracted is expected to integrate him/herself in a productive and harmonious manner with the other members of the department.

General description

The selected applicant will join the Department of Environment and Sustainability, which main challenge is to transition towards the transdisciplinary and implement sustainable actions at different spatial and temporal scales. The group’s mission is to generate scientific and technological knowledge within the ecological and socio-environmental fields about the functioning, structure, and interactions of conserved and transformed ecosystems. We are looking for a candidate that can apply a multidisciplinary approach to generate knowledge that contribute to the analysis of global issues, such as sustainable development, global change, or population growth, among others. The candidate must have proven experience to generate and apply methods in the field of sustainable management of natural resources. We expect that their research is susceptible to use in decision-making and for the development of strategies and policies that promote human welfare and sustainable development. The candidate should have a broad interest in developing and using diverse methodologies and innovative educational practices in the training of human resources and in the technical training of various social actors.

The selected candidate will work in the Department of Environment and Sustainability on the following topics:

  • Forest resources management, including their use and services.
  • Environmental policies and legislation and their relation to social actors in the context of sustainability. 
  • Massive data and machine learning in environmental sciences.
  • Ecosystem services, integrity and management, including adaptation strategies to global change.

Responsibilities 

  • Develop original research and publish the results following the provisions of the Academic Staff Statutes (EPA). The person occupying the position must dedicate 100% of his/her time to the research topics for which he/she was hired. If the contracted person wishes to address other related topics, after having formally obtained the approval of the academic group to which they are attached, they may be able to allocate up to 30% of their time to these other topics, but must dedicate most of their efforts to addressing the research issues established in their contract.
  • Formulate and lead research projects to obtain funding for his/her research and to contribute to the infrastructure (research equipment) and development of the Department and the Institute.
  • Participate in the training of students in INECOL's Master's and Doctorate programs through the teaching of courses and thesis supervision. The selected candidate is also expected to contribute to the training of undergraduate students and other visiting students affiliated to higher education institutions with which INECOL has formal collaborations. Of particular interest will be the candidate's willingness to participate in courses on the INECOL’s postgraduate programs. The candidate may also propose innovative courses that complement the department's student training activities.
  • Participate in INECOL’s public outreach and popular science initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other researchers from their department, other INECOL departments and other institutions.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability or in related areas.
  • Postdoctoral period of research of at least six months in an academic institution different from the one that granted the applicant’s doctorate.
  • Experience in teaching at the graduate or undergraduate level (preferable, but not essential).
  • Authorship of at least five recent scientific publications (at least three as first author or corresponding author), in high-quality indexed scientific journals.
  • Proven skills in writing grant and project applications.
  • Ability and willingness to work with the private sector and/or government agencies in collaborative projects and to procure institutional resources.
  • Experience of living and working in Latin America is desirable but not essential.
  • Basic communication skills in Spanish preferable; and a willingness to learn the language.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to perform different tasks simultaneously, ability to negotiate and deal with pressure and complex or stressful situations.
  • Skills and abilities in building and working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to work outside of regular hours, including weekends, and to travel (occasionally required).
  • Commitment to ethics and scientific integrity.
  • All other things being equal, the person who demonstrates the greatest emotional intelligence will be hired.
